Serpent Handlers of Jolo, West Virginia

Practitioners, or self-described sign-followers, prefer the term serpent-handling to snake-handling noting that they incorporate poisonous reptiles not common snakes into religious worship.)

  1. Wow, the snake handler video was quite interesting. I have always been open to other forms of worship and religion other than the baptist raising I had growing up as the daughter of a baptist minister, but this is something that would be very challenging for me to accept although it is interesting. It seems to me the point being made is that if a person is a true believer and has faith that they can handle the snakes and drink the poison without harm unless their faith is weak, any comments or clarification on my interpretation are welcomed

  2. Jackie, a very interesting opening comment!!

We all bring our past into our interpretations. That puts a filter on our type of understanding. I went to my first live visit to a church using serpents last month and at this point my interpretation of what I saw and felt shifts every day.

But it did have a tremendous impact on my life. I know mainly how living in Mexico changed me, but I do not know how witnessing this church will change me. I am hoping you all can help me grow in my understanding of this and everything we examine.

Talking to Keith who has been to over 30 churches should move us along in exploring this social phenomena and its place in our society and our lives.
